Top 5 California Golden Bears Football Teams of All-Time

Cal football has a rich legacy of early dominance, West Coast flair, and unforgettable moments—from the Wonder Teams of the 1920s to “The Play” and Marshawn Lynch running wild. Berkeley has long been home to brilliance, chaos, and game-breaking stars. Here are the Top 5 Cal teams of all time.

#5 – 2006 – 10–3 | Pac-10 Co-Champions | The DeSean Era Begins

Cal bounced back from a rocky start to finish 10–3, share the Pac-10 title, and earn a berth in the Holiday Bowl, where they steamrolled Texas A&M 45–10. QB Nate Longshore, RB Marshawn Lynch, and WR DeSean Jackson led an electric offense that averaged over 32 points per game. The defense also featured future pros like Daymeion Hughes and Brandon Mebane. Though they fell short against USC in a close 23–9 loss, this team re-established Cal as a West Coast power and showcased the explosiveness of its next-generation stars.

#4 – 1991 – 10–2 | Top-10 Finish | The Other Rodgers-Led Squad

Before Aaron Rodgers, there was Mike Pawlawski and RB Russell White, who led Cal to a 10–2 record and a 55–17 blowout win over Clemson in the Citrus Bowl. Under Bruce Snyder, the Bears finished #8 in the AP Poll, their best ranking since the Waldorf era. The team averaged 36 points per game and won six straight to end the season. This squad’s dominant bowl performance and balanced attack marked one of Cal’s finest showings on a national stage and remains one of just three Cal teams since World War II to reach 10 wins.

#3 – 2004 – 10–2 | #9 AP Finish | The Rodgers Reintroduction

Behind head coach Jeff Tedford and rising star QB Aaron Rodgers, Cal went 10–1 in the regular season, with its only loss coming in a 23–17 thriller at #1 USC — a game they arguably should have won. The Bears were controversially left out of the BCS in favor of Texas, settling for the Holiday Bowl, where they fell to Texas Tech. Still, the team finished #9 in the AP Poll, its highest since 1951, and produced a 2,000-yard rusher in J.J. Arrington. Rodgers completed 66% of his passes with just 8 interceptions, and the team featured future NFL talent across the board. This was the year Cal proved it belonged among college football’s elite.

#2 – 1950 – 9–1 | PCC Champions, Rose Bowl Berth | The Last Bowl Before the Drought

Head coach Pappy Waldorf led the Bears to a third straight PCC title and a third consecutive Rose Bowl appearance, finishing the regular season 9–0 before falling to Ohio State. With future NFL talent like QB Bob Celeri and a run-first offense, the ’50 squad extended Cal’s dominance in the late ’40s and early ’50s — a run that saw them finish Top 10 in three straight seasons. Cal outscored its opponents 240–103 and remained unbeaten through a tough Pacific Coast Conference slate. Though they never won the Rose Bowl under Waldorf, this era remains the golden standard of sustained excellence in Berkeley.

#1 – 1937 – 10–0–1 | National Champions | The Thunder Team

Coached by Stub Allison, the 1937 Golden Bears finished undefeated (10–0–1) and claimed the national championship after a 13–0 win over Alabama in the Rose Bowl. Led by All-Americans Sam Chapman and Vic Bottari, Cal allowed just 33 points all season and dominated the Pacific Coast Conference. Known as “The Thunder Team,” they shut out six opponents and played with a bruising, physical style that overwhelmed foes. This was Cal’s last consensus national title and a defining moment in the program’s early identity. Nearly nine decades later, it remains the high-water mark for Golden Bear football.

Wouldn’t 2005 be the beginning of the DeSean era since his first catch was a touchdown vs. Sac State?

I would say you could argue either way! He had a solid Freshman campaign but I’d say 2006 (Soph year) is when he became a problem and a household name (hence that era starting). He came to Cal in 2005 but 2006 was the year he became a star…he was also an All-American that season!
