Once a northeastern powerhouse, Syracuse football has a rich history of dominant defenses, legendary runners, and major bowl success. From Jim Brown and Ernie Davis to Don McPherson’s national title run, the Orange have left a lasting mark on college football. Here are the Top 5 Syracuse teams of all time.
#5 – 1966 – 8–3 | Gator Bowl Champs | Floyd’s Last Run

With Floyd Little in the backfield, the ’66 team was Syracuse’s last truly dominant squad of the Schwartzwalder era. The Orange went 8–3, beat Tennessee in the Gator Bowl, and finished #16 in the AP Poll. Little was an All-American, and the team featured a tenacious defense that allowed just 11.4 points per game. It was a strong final note before the program’s brief decline in the late ’60s.

#4 – 1998 – 8–4 | Big East Champs | McNabb’s Curtain Call

Donovan McNabb’s final season in orange was full of fireworks. Syracuse went 8–4, won the Big East title, and beat Miami and Virginia Tech in the same season — no small feat. McNabb finished his career with over 9,000 total yards, multiple Player of the Year honors, and a 62–56 bowl win over Kentucky in a shootout. Though not their highest-ranked team, 1998 was one of the most exciting seasons in program history and cemented McNabb’s place as an all-time great.
#3 – 1992 – 10–2 | Fiesta Bowl Champs | Marvin the Menace

The 1992 Orange, led by WR Marvin Harrison, QB Marvin Graves, and RB David Walker, went 10–2 and crushed Colorado 26–22 in the Fiesta Bowl. The team finished #6 in the Coaches Poll and became known for its explosive offense and resilience. The win in the desert marked Syracuse’s first major bowl victory since 1959, and signaled a return to national relevance under Paul Pasqualoni.

#2 – 1987 – 11–0–1 | Sugar Bowl Tie | The Perfect Almost

In Dick MacPherson’s best season, the Orange went 11–0 in the regular season and played Auburn to a 16–16 tie in the Sugar Bowl. QB Don McPherson finished second in Heisman voting, and the team soared to #4 in the final AP Poll. With a mix of speed, toughness, and swagger, Syracuse beat Penn State, West Virginia, and Boston College and proved it could still hang with the big programs. It was the best Orange team of the modern era — and just one kick away from perfection.
#1 – 1959 – 11–0 | National Champions | Ernie’s Crown

Coached by Ben Schwartzwalder, the 1959 Orange went 11–0, defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, and were named consensus national champions. Led by RB Ernie Davis, who later became the first African-American to win the Heisman (in 1961), this team dominated with a smothering defense (six shutouts) and a punishing run game. Syracuse outscored opponents 413–73, finished #1 in both the AP and Coaches Polls, and remains the only national champion in school history.
